Biography
German-French operatic tenor who was the leading Wagnerian tenor of the '50s and '60s. He appeared in most of the leading European opera houses and was with Covent Garden in 1955 and the Met in 1957. Windgassen made his debut in 1941 and from 1945-1972 he sang leading roles with Stuttgart opera.
As his parents were both singers, he studied with his father. He became a fine musician and conscientious artist whose performances gave much pleasure.
Windgassen died on 9/05/1974, Stuttgart, Germany.
