Biography

Dutch ecclesiastic, a Cardinal since 1969 and the founder of the Catholic Center for Ecumenical Questions in 1952. He served as the President and Secretariat for the Union of Christians in 1969, and as the Archbishop of Utrecht in 1975.

The Cardinal nicknamed “The Flying Dutchman” died on the evening of August 1, 2006 in Denekamp, The Netherlands, at age 96, just a month before his 97th birthday. The Vatican conferred the nickname in admiration for his world-wide travels undertaken to improve relationships between Catholics, other Christians and Jews.
