Baumann was the founder of the expressionist artist group The new life and also conveyed the ideas of the Bauhaus. In 1927 he studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Munich.
Wiemken, together with his friends Walter Bodmer and Otto Abbot, established in 1933 the Group 33- in protest against the conservative tendencies in the Swiss (Basel especially) artists and architects. The group had a clear anti-fascist orientation.
