Johnny Whitaker (1973)

Biography

American actor and singer notable for several film and television performances during his childhood. The naturally redheaded Whitaker is best known for his roles as Brian Keith's nephew, Jody Davis, on Family Affair from 1966 to 1971, Scotty Baldwin on General Hospital in 1965, the lead in Hallmark's 1969 The Littlest Angel, and the title character in the 1973 musical version of Tom Sawyer.

Whitaker married Symbria Wright of Reseda, California, in 1984. She divorced him four years later to marry the friend that threw his bachelor party, which Whitaker says led him to abuse drugs and alcohol for nine years. Whitaker's family held an intervention and threatened not to have any more contact with him unless he got help for his substance abuse. He agreed and started a twelve-step program. Whitaker became a certified drug counsellor and founded a nonprofit organization for Spanish-speaking addicts. In 2011, he said that he had been clean and sober for 13 years.
