Frederick Carlton Weyand

Biography

American military who rose to the ranks of General and was commander of US forces in Vietnam during the final year of the war. He carried out his military duties although he had become convinced early on that the war was a rather futile endeavor. Earlier in the war he served as a deputy commander to General Westmoreland. In 1967 he was reported as complaining that the war was unwinnable.

Weyand joined the service in 1940 and married Arline Langhart after having earned a degree in criminology the previous year. During the war he served in intelligence, an area in which he would develop expertise useful throughout his career. With an analytical penchant, he was known for his ability to turn information into action. He saw active combat in the Korean War and again in Vietnam. After his 1976 retirement from the Army, he became a vice president and corporate secretary for a Hawaiian bank. He retired from the bank in 1982 and went on to manage a trustee of the Damon estate, established by the founder of the bank.

He and his wife raised three children. She died in 2001 and he died on February 10, 2010 at his Honolulu home.
