Biography
American country-western singer so popular in the decades from the 1950s to the early 1970s that she earned the moniker "The Queen of Country Music."
Wells sang and played guitar early in her life. While a teenager she sang with her sisters (The Deason Sisters) who performed on radio in 1936. There she met Johnnie Wright who gave her the stage name of Kitty Wells taken from an old ballad. They married in 1937 and began touring with one of her sister under the name of Johnnie Wright and the Harmony Girls. With the addition of her sister Louise's husband, Jack Anglin, the group performed under the name of The Tennessee Hillbillies and later The Tennessee Mountain Boys. It wasn't until 1952 that she had her first hit record. That same year she joined the Grand Ole Opry. In 1974 she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and in 1991 was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
