Biography
British politician and Member of Parliament, for several terms and a fraternal twin (his twin is a sister).
He was first elected to Parliament in October 1964 and was re-elected several times until his retirement in 1992. A tailor by trade, he rose through a clothesmaking firm to become chairperson. His mother advised him to stay humble and to do so he kept a thimble in his pocket . During his Parliamentary career, he rose to Speaker of the House of Commons and was the last speaker to wear the traditional wig.
He and his wife Lyn, whom he married in 1949, had three children. He died at age 86 on May 6, 2007 in Caterham, Surrey, England after a brief illness. He was 86.
