Biography
American playwright, a Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist known for her plays about educated women facing challenges in post-liberation America. Her plays include "Uncommon Women and Others," 1977, "Isn't It Romantic," 1983 and "The Heidi Chronicles," 1988.
In 1999 she gave birth to her daughter, Lucy Jane, who was born three months prematurely. Wasserstein, nearly 49, did not reveal the father's identity. The child survived and thrived.
The playwright died of lymphoma on January 30, 2006 in Manhattan; she was 55. Her mother Lola, who was the model for some of Wasserstein's material on mothers, died on June 17, 2007 in New York at age 89.
