German writer, famous for describing the conflicts his anti-heroes have in his novels and stories. In 1998 he was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in Frankfurt. He is married and has four daughters from this marriage: Franziska Walser is a renowned actress; Alissa Walser is a writer-and-painter; Johanna Walser, and Theresia Walser are professional writers. German journalist Jakob Augstein is Walser's illegitimate son from a relationship with translator Maria Carlsson.
