Biography
French military physician who, in 1868, proved that tuberculosis was contagious rather than hereditary as had formerly been thought. Villemin observed that otherwise healthy young men were developing TB while living in crowded barracks, and through his experiments on rabbits, he proved that quarantine was an effective means of stopping the spread of the disease. His discovery revolutionized the way tuberculosis victims were treated and was the first real step toward control of the disease.
Villemin died on 10/6/1892.
