Biography

French writer widely popular for his science fiction novels and amazing anticipation of future discoveries. (Regarded as the father of science fiction, Verne predicted the use of submarines, helicopters, air conditioning, guided missiles, trips to outer space and motion pictures long before they were developed.) His books included "From the Earth to the Moon," 1865 "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," 1870 and "Around the World In Eighty Days," 1872. The son of a magistrate, he was educated at Lycee and went to Paris to study law. He became interested in the theatre and began writing plays and opera librettos. He achieved success with his first short fantasy, "Five Weeks in a Balloon" released in 1863. Verne's books have been translated into many languages, and plays and films have been made from a number of them. Verne was made an officer of the Legion of Honor in 1892 and served on the municipal council in Amiens. His last years were marked with enormous popularity and numerous honors. By the time of his death, Verne had written over 50 books.

His personal life seems to have been uneventful and he died on 3/24/1905, Amiens, France
