Biography
American columnist who, with her twin sister Ann Landers, both became nationally syndicated advice columnists. Together the girls wrote gossip columns from their high school and college days. They married in a double ceremony in 1939.
"Dear Abby" receives 3,000 letters a day and those with a stamped return envelope are answered within a three-week period, thanks to her dedicated staff of six. From 1956, she has written six columns a week, forthright, honest, humorous and sometimes showing a bawdy sense of humor.
Tiny at barely over five feet, she is friendly as a puppy, which conceals a deep sense of privacy. She and her twin sister had one older and one younger sisters, all close for their lifetimes. That family closeness continues into the next generation as Abby's daughter Jeannie works with her, and she has a long-term, comfortable marriage.
Relationships
- sibling relationship with Landers, Ann (born 3 July 1918)
Events

Source Notes
A Sioux City Library newspaper birth announcement gives July 3, 1918. People magazine noted in July 1976 that "the twins were born 17 minutes apart with Esther preceding Pauline." Ann Landers gave July 4 in a letter printed in "Celebrity Register." Marc Penfield gave 10:09 AM CWT for Abigail Van Buren and 10:00 AM for Ann Landers, as "personal" with July 4 for both. Steinbrecher gives July 3, 1918 with 9:52 AM CWT.
LMR has a letter in hand from Abigail Van Landers in which she wrote," July 4, 1918 is the wrong birth date, please do not print the information in "Profiles of Women." Could we have a case in which one twin, Abigail, was born before midnight (on the 3rd) and the other, Ann, after midnight (on the 4th)?
