Biography
Italian-born mountain climber and guide, he was born in the Tyrol in the Dolomites where he found climbing fascinating even as a young man. He joined the paratroopers and taught others climbing skills. After his military service, he began mountaineering as a profession and became noted for finding new mountain routes and for his own skills. In 2004 he climbed Mount Everest and K2 within 53 days and without oxygen. His feat landed him in the Guiness Book of World Records.The recipient of many medals and prizes, he was awarded the Cavaliere Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana On July 15, 2008 he died while climbing Pakistan's Nanga Parbat's Rakhiot face. A ledge of snow collapsed under him, hurling his body into a crevasse.
