Biography
Japanese train crash that killed over 90 people and injured approximately 400 others, trapping some passengers in the twisted wreck for more than 2 days. The total passenger count was about 530 people.
The train was hurtling around a bend in Amagasaki when it derailed and crashed into an apartment building; it was billed as the deadliest train wreck in Japan in four decades. Speed was named as the most likely cause as Japanese trains run with precision, and this one was trying to make up for a 90-second delay. The train's driver was also young (23) and somewhat inexperienced, one report claimed. The same report said the same driver had been reprimanded several months prior for overshooting a platform by 328 feet.
The New York Times report described the crash as follows: "The first two cars slammed into a nine-story apartment building just 20 feet from the tracks, with the front car hurtling into a first-floor parking garage and the second car twisting itself around a corner of the building."
