Biography

American politician, a lawyer, farmer and U.S. Senator from South Carolina. He had two marriages and four kids. In 2000 he was still on the job, walking the congressional halls in between sessions, occasionally being directed to where he was scheduled to be.

The controversial politician and longest-serving Senator in U.S. history died at age 100 on June 26, 2003 at about 9:45 PM in his hometown of Edgefield, SC. He had retired from public life in January 2003 after 48 years in the U.S. Senate. On December 15, 2003, a lovely black woman claimed she was his illegitimate daughter. Her claim proved to be true; she acknowledged that Thurmond had supported her by sending money. Essie Mae Washington-Williams was born, according to the news media, on October 12, 1925.
