British actress born in Karachi, India (now Pakistan), to a father who was often away from home with the Indian army. When her parents divorced, her dad took custody of her upbringing and it was 11 years before she again saw her mother.

Thorne is usually seen as a genteel middle-class suburbanite with a feisty streak. Thorne was featured in the successful series, "To the Manor Born," September 1979 to November 1981. In 1982, she played the role of Margaret Thatcher for a year in the satirical play "Anyone for Denis?" The peak of her fame was 1984-85 with the popular TV show, "Three Up, Two Down," April 1985 to June 1989.
