Fred Thompson

Biography

American lawyer, politician and sometime actor, he is the subject of a "Draft Thompson for President in 2008" movement. As of this writing in July 2007 he has not indicated whether he will run though in June he formed an exploratory committee.

Though he was born in Alabama, he grew up in Tennessee and attended Memphis State University, graduating with a major in philosophy and political science. He earned his law degree from Vanderbilt University in 1971. In 1973 he was appointed Assistant United States Attorney. At age 30, he was appointed Minority Counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee, where he served in 1973 and 1974. At least one newspaper alleged that he may have acted as a mole for the Nixon White House during the Watergate hearings, tipping Nixon and company off about the fact that the famous tapes would be subpoened. He wrote about Watergate in his 1975 book, "At That Point in Time." His work on a case in Tennessee helped unseat the governor at the time. A movie was made about the scandal ("Marie") and Thompson played himself, launching an acting career.

In 1994 Thompson was sent to the Senate by the electorate of Tennessee in order to complete the term left vacant by Al Gore.. He was re-elected in 1996 but declined to run in 2002, after his adult daughter died. He has since been seen in many episodes of the popular TV series "Law and Order" and has served on special political assignments. Thompson was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins' lymphoma in 2004.

In 2007 Thompson is seen by some who hope to get the Republican Party back on its formerly successful Reagan track as the next Ronald Reagan. His detractors, however, see no Ronald Reagan, thinking him lazy, unambitious, and without the charisma or the conviction to be the Party nominee and savior.

Thompson has been married twice. In 1959, he married Sarah Elizabeth with whom he had three kids. They divorced in 1985. In 2002 he married Jeri Kehn and they have two children. According to Politico.com, he announced his intention to run for President after a very long exploratory period. The announcement came according to Politico.com "At 7:57 p.m. Eastern time Wednesday [September 5, 2007], while taping "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" for broadcast later in the evening, Fred Thompson finally said: "I'm running for president of the United States."

After poor showing in early caucuses and primaries, Thompson dropped out of the race on January 22, 2008.
