Biography

American teacher and author of the 1990 best-seller "The Dead Girl." Thernstrom wrote this book about her friend Roberta Lee who was murdered 11/04/1984 in a park. While attending Harvard, she used the book as her senior thesis and later received $400,000 from a NY publisher for the publication. Currently she is a teacher and writer at Cornell University.

"Bibi Lee," the book's main character, was attending UC Berkeley and disappeared while jogging in an Oakland park. Her body was found five weeks later bludgeoned to death. Her boyfriend Bradley Page confessed to the murder and received a six year sentence.

In 1997, Thernstrom published her "Halfway Heaven: Diary of a Harvard Murder," in which she related another true crime. In May 1995, Sinedu Tadesse (whom Thernstrom had met briefly while teaching writing at Harvard) stabbed her sleeping roommate Tran Phuong Ho, a Vietnamese refugee and popular premed student, then hanged herself in the bathroom of their dorm.
