Iraqi terrorist attack. A sedan driven by a suicide bomber and filled with explosives drove into a crowd of Iraqi police and army recruits just as the area was milling with morning traffic. The attack was called the deadliest single attack since the 2003 fall of Saddam Hussein. More than 120 people were killed and more than 170 were injured. The target seemed to be the army and police recruits who were waiting for medical check-ups at a clinic in the city center. The mayor's office and the main market were close by. So powerful was the blast that the shops across the street were set on fire.
PT quotes Associated Press story in New York Times on Feb. 28, 2005. The town's name is variously given as "Hilla" or "Al-Hillah."
