Biography

Terrorist attack in Southern Russia where over 20 armed terrorists attacked a school on the first day of the children's return after the summer holiday. The terrorists, including Chechen rebels and Arabs with ties to Al-Qaeda according to Russian officials, held over 1200 children and adults hostage for two days until the government stormed the building on September 3. Survivors reported on the insufferable conditions in which they were forced to live, including intense heat, lack of food and water, witnessing executions and enduring the agony of watching terrorists wire explosives and of anticipating their own violent deaths. Over 330 people, many of whom were children, were killed.

According to an Associated Press timeline citing Russian and regional officials and media reports, gunmen seized the school at 9 AM on September 1, 2004 and exchanged gunfire with police leaving several people dead and wounded. The terrorists were reportedly wearing suicide-bombs. At 4:40 PM, at least 12 children and one adult ,who had been hiding in a boiler room, escaped. All others were reportedly held in the gymnasium. By 7:30 that evening, authorities had established contact with the hostage-takers who refused to allow authorities to bring in food or water or other supplies.

At 4:45 PM on the next day (September 2), thanks to the efforts of an expert negotiator, 26 hostages were released. One of the freed women returned to the school to stay with the still-captive children. By 8 PM that evening, officials estimated that over 1,000 hostages had been taken. An hour later, a local official announced that 20 male hostages had been executed inside the school.

At 1:00 AM on Friday, September 3, one policeman was wounded by the terrorists' fire, which authorities called unprovoked. Twelve hours later, at 1 PM, emergency workers were given permission to retrieve the bodies of the dead hostages that had been left lying in front of the building for the past two days. At around the same time, with explosions set off inside the school, possibly accidentally by the terrorists, some hostages tried to flee, but the militants opened fire. With security forces returning the fire, 30 women and children were escorted to safety.

By 1:45 PM, as terrorists began to flee the building, security forces pursued them while others stormed the building. Within 15 minutes, more hostages were freed. At 2:30 PM, Russian commandos seized the building, blowing a hole in the wall of the school to aid hostages in their escape. By 3:17 PM, all hostages were evacuated, but hundreds were found dead. Early news reports said that dozens of bodies were found in the school, including 100 in the gymnasium, some of whom had been killed when the roof collapsed in one of the explosions. Ten of the terrorists were reportedly killed by gunfire exchanged with security forces. More than 400 people were wounded, including 180 children.
