The Boston Marathon is an annual marathon hosted by several cities in Greater Boston in eastern Massachusetts. It is always held on Patriots' Day, the third Monday of April. Begun on 19 April 1897 at 12.19 pm, inspired by the success of the first modern-day marathon competition in the 1896 Summer Olympics, the Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon, and ranks as one of the world's best-known road racing events. The marathon's distance was changed in 1908 in accordance with Olympic standards to its current length of 26 miles 385 yards or 42'195 meters.
On Thursday evening, 18 April 2013, the brothers Dzhokar Tsarnaev, born 22 July 1993, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, born 21 October 1986, were named as suspects for the bombing. The older brother was killed by the police (pronounced dead at 1.35 am Friday 19th), while the younger was captured by the police on Friday evening.
