Biography

American astronaut and politician, a Congressman.

The son of a Denver, CO ophthalmologist, he served as a fighter pilot in the Korean War. The fun-loving Swigert's bachelor pad was the scene of many impromptu parties during his astronaut days. After leaving the space program he served as executive director of the U.S. House Committee on Science and Technology from 1973-1977. In 1978 he lost a Republican primary race against Bill Armstrong for a Colorado U.S. Senate seat, but in 1982 won a congressional seat in a landslide.

During the 1982 election he announced that he had bone-marrow cancer and, just a week before he would have been sworn in, he died on 12/27/1982 at age 51.
