Biography

American passenger on American Flt .11 who was able to get through on her cell phone, crying "Oh my God, I see buildings! I see water!" just before her line went dead. Her chilling remarks describing what was going on that plane moments before it hit the New York World Trade tower which gave us the first information that fatal morning of 9/11/2001.

Amy was married to Michael G. Sweeney of Acton, Ma. On 2/11/ 2002 Amy Sweeney was honored along with the relatives of the pilot John Ogonowski and flight attendant Betty Ong when Gov. Jane Swift presented the Madeline Amy Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery. The award will be presented every year on Sept 11 to a Massachusetts citizen recognized for extraordinary courage and bravery in an effort to save a life. Michael Sweeney said he will draw comfort knowing that his wife's memory will be preserved through the award. The ceremony drew Senators Edward Kennedy and John Kerry, State Attorney General Thomas Reilly as well as numerous other dignitaries. Cong. Martin Meehan of Mass. said "I am in awe of the actions that took place on that flight." Ogonowski opened the microphone that allowed air traffic controllers to know what was happening in the cockpit. Sweeney gave the seat assignments of the hijackers.
