Biography
American serial killer by poison, alleged to have killed around 60 people worldwide though the exact number is unknown.
Dr. Swango's case is detailed in James B. Stewart's book, "Blind Eye." It was this book and Stewart's publicity associated with it that forced the Feds to file charges of murder. Swango was in jail on a forgery charge and was slated to be released shortly. Only days before his release, he was charged with multiple murders. He ultimately pled guilty to several murders and received multiple life sentences. Due to the length of his several sentences, he will most likely never be released.
Swango has been described as charming, articulate and brilliant, also cunning and sociopathic. He loved to kill, as he related in his journal. His detailed accounts of his love of death and destruction were important factors in his conviction.
Swango's m.o. was poison. As a doctor he administered arsenic as well as other drugs to patients in hospitals where he worked. He was able to "ply his trade" for over 16 years before he was brought to justice. He forged documents, changed his name, moved to different states, different medical facilities and even went abroad where he poisoned patients in a hospital in Africa. He was able to convince psychiatrists that he was "normal."
