German stage actress named Best Actress at the Berlin's film festival. A striking, versatile stage actress, she carried the title role in Fassbinder's "Lola" in 1982. Her films include "Rosa Luxemburg" in 1985 and "the African Woman" in 1990.

A communist sympathizer, she was called "Red Barbara".

On 19 December 2011, it was announced that she would be on the jury for the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival, scheduled to be held in February 2012.
