Biography

Dutch Indonesian spiritual leader with an Islamic background, given a spiritual vision and a Messianic message as his Call. He founded Subud, a form of Islamic mysticism in which the supplicant is initiated by means of the "latihan," a kind of meditative communal submission to divine understanding. During the latihan the devotee is "opened," an experience which may be expressed in silent meditation, in dancing and movement, in speaking in tongues or whatever form the applicant wishes to employ, but a method of communion that involved surrender.
