Biography
American politician, Mayor of Cleveland 1967 and 1969, TV newscaster and U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of the Seychelles. Noted for being the first black mayor of a major U.S. city, Stokes served in WW II before he finished high school and college. He achieved his law degree in 1956 and was the twice elected mayor of Cleveland, followed by a position as a TV newscaster by 1972.
Stokes died of cancer 4/03/1996 Cleveland, OH.
