Biography

Scottish politician, a member of Parliament and leader of the Liberal Party. While in college in 1959, he served as the President of Edinburgh University's Liberals. Three years later he was working as the Assistant Secretary to the Scottish Liberal Party. In 1964 he was elected to Parliament and was the youngest member of the group; he served for two years. From 1971-1975 he worked as the Liberal Chief Whip. One year later, in 1976, he finally became the leader of the Liberal Party.

As a journalist and broadcaster, he also has worked as a TV interviewer, served as the host of a weekly show and authored several books. His father was a minister who worked as a missionary in Kenya, the place in which he was raised.

Married, he has two sons and one daughter. He prefers being known as "Sir David" than as "Lord Steel."

On 6/11/1987 he returned to Parliament at the General Election, and was a member of Parliament for the 1999 session opening July 1.
