Biography
American entrepreneur, the founder of Stanford University in memory of his son. In 1885, with a gift of land and securities, he founded the University. Entering politics in 1861, he went on to become the governor of California and a U.S. Senator. Stanford also was a lawyer and railroad builder.
He died in 1893.
