American politician, New York State's Attorney General and Governor. Named "Crusader of the Year" by Time Magazine in 2002, Spitzer made a name for himself as an honest prosecutor of wrongdoers particularly in the financial sector. He subsequently resigned from the Governor's Office after it was discovered that he had used a prostitute and had asked her to accompany him across state lines.
Spitzer grew up in a privileged family, the son of a wealthy real estate magnate. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, Spitzer began his career working in the public and private sectors as as a clerk for a US Distrct Judge, as an attorney in a law firm and as a prosecutor in the Rackets Bureau of the Manhattan district attorney's office. He successfully prosecuted a case against a Mafia family and established his reputation as tough on crime. In 1994, he waged an unsuccessful bid for election to Attorney General; four years later in a repeat run, he won the election and was elected for a second term in 2002. On November 6, 2006 he won election as the state's Governor. In March 2008 a story broke that named him as a client of a high-end prostitute ring that was under federal invesigation. Spitzer had been caught in a wire-tap that, according to the NY Times, "had been prompted by his own efforts to quietly make payments to the agency, Emperors Club VIP."Sorrowfully and shamefully, his wife at his side, he resigned on March 12, 2008.
He had met his wife Silda Wall while he was in law school and they married in 1987. They have three daughters: Elyssa, Sarabeth, and Jenna.
