Biography
American actor, son of British actor/comedian Edward Askew Sothern. Young Edward was a versatile actor, claiming a repertoire of 125 parts. Although he took on many Shakespearean roles, he was perhaps best known for his portrayal of the hero in romantic dramas, such as The Prisoner of Zenda. He began his professional acting career in New York in 1879, with his father's theatre company. In 1911 he married his frequent leading lady, Julia Marlowe. They retired from the theatre in 1924.
He published his autobiography, "The Melancholy Tale of Me," in 1916. He died on October 28, 1933, in New York City, age 73.
