Source Notes

This entry is not to be used for research. AstroDatabank cannot record dates BCE (Before Christian Era). Any chart generated from this entry will yield a horoscope for 5/20/467 AD and this is clearly incorrect. The original entry gave a date of May 20, 467 at 12:00 PM in Athens, Greece and the original source notes said: Date undetermined, letter from Diana K. Rosenberg.

The birth date of Socrates was given in Stanley's History of Philosophy as the "6th Thargelion in the 4th year of the 77th Olympiad, which was equated with May 20, 467 BC".

"Some years back I wrote to Arthur Blackwell, a calendar expert, to ask if he thought that equated date was correct; he was very ill, dying in fact, and wrote that he didn't have his books with him to calculate the corrected date, but he was pretty sure it was not the one given.

With a library book on calendars, I tried to work it out myself - Thargelion was the 11 month of 12 (the year began at the summer solstice); the 12 months alternated 29 or 30 days, with periodic intercalations of 29 or 30 days; the month began when the Moon was 1st visible after cnj (New Moon).

"The trouble with 467 BC (-466) is my old (1907) Britannica says he was born at Athens "not earlier than 471 nor later than May or June 469 BC" (the more recent ones just say "c 470 BC").

"He was hemlocked in 399 BC (no date) at, they say, 70 years, which would make 469 the best bet for a birth year (or if he died in 399 before his birthday, then 468)...but let's stop torturing ourselves and say 469 (-468).

"The Summer Solstice dates: in 470 BC (-469) the Solstice was (Gregorian) 6 24 -469, 3:58:00 UT.

In 469 BC (-468) the Solstice was 6 23 -468, 9 48 21 UT."
