Biography

Scottish-American journalist, writer and Bureau Chief of the New York Times in 1976, received the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1974. Smith wrote "The Russians" in 1976, "The New Russians" in 1990 and "The Power Game, How Washington Works." He served as a correspondent for The Times in Moscow, the Middle East and Vietnam.

Born to American parents, he lived in Great Britain, Germany and Spain. He graduated summa cum laude in 1955, received a Fulbright scholarship and spent three years in the USAF. He married a second time 3/07/1987; he has four children by a previous marriage.
