Biography

British politician, leader of the British Conservative party until a vote of no confidence was taken on October 29, 2003 at 19:00 BST in London. Michael Howard succeeded him as leader of the party.

He was first elected to Parliament in 1992; prior to that he had served in the Scottish Guards and had worked in private industry. In 1997, he was promoted to the Shadow Cabinet and served as Shadow Secretary of State for Social Security. Two years later, in 1999, he became Shadow Defense Secretary. He was leader of the Conservative Party from September 2001 until November 2003.

He has been married since 1982 and he and his wife Betsy have four children, two sons and two daughters.
