Biography
American astrogeologist and U.S. government official, the noted co-discoverer of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 which made a spectacular, televised collision with Jupiter in July 1994. He has the distinction of being the first person to have a lunar burial as his ashes were aboard NASA's Lunar Prospector which crashed into the earth's Moon on 7/31/1999 at 04:52 AM CDT at a speed of approximately 3,800 mph. He had always wanted to make a space shot with the astronauts but died in a car accident on July 18, 1997 in Alice Springs, Australia.
