Biography
American ecclesiastic, a Roman Catholic bishop of Colorado Springs, CO, who in spring 2004 agreed with the idea that any politician who voted for positions contrary to Catholic Church teachings should not receive Communion, one of the central Catholic rites. He went a step further on May 1, 2004 when he issued a pastoral letter advising that Catholics who vote for candidates who support abortion rights, same-sex marriage, stem-cell research and euthanasia, not take communion. He singled out these four issues because, he claimed, they are "intrinsically evil."
