Biography

Italian ecclesiastic, a Roman Catholic Cardinal. Ordained as a priest on July 18, 1970, Cardinal Scola has doctoral degrees in theology and philosophy. After ordination he taught at the University of Friboourg, and, in 1982 he became professor of theological

anthropology at the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. In addition, he ttaught contemporary Christology at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.

On July 20, 1991, he was appointed Bishop of Grosseto and he was installed in the office on September 21, 1991.

He became Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University and President of the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in 1995. On January 5, 2002, Pope John Paul II

appointed him Patriarch of Venice, and on April 9, 2002 he was elected President of the Bishops’ Conference of the Triveneta region. He was one of those named as a possible successor to Pope John Paul II.
