Source Notes

In January 2008 PT changed this record to AA based on Shelley Jordan's e-mails with the Director of the Schumann house: Dear Shelley Jordan, thanks for your inquiry. There is a baptism record for Robert Schumann in the so called "Kirchenbücher" (= church books, i.e. baptism records) of the Zwickau Marienkirche (today called Dom) of which a copy is displayed in our permanent exposition. It says that Schumann was born "Abends halb zehn Uhr" (in the evening half past nine). Best wishes for your research article (of which we would be very grateful for a copy for our research library) Yours, Thomas Synofzik, Robert-Schumann-Haus Zwickau, Dr. Thomas Synofzik - Director

Joan Chissel Biography: "Schumann," p.13, gives 9:30 PM. Same in Sabian Symbols No.832. In July 2004, Sy Scholfield cites biography, book by John Daverio, "Robert Schumann: Herald of a 'New Poetic Age'" (Oxford UP, 1997), p. 20: "It was here in Zwickau on 8 June 1810 at 10:30 PM that Robert Schuman was born, the fifth and last child of August Schuman and Johanna Christiana Schuman nee Schnabel."

11 October 2013, Alois Treindl: We keep the 21.30 official time; it is probably LAT and not LMT, but the difference is only 87 seconds and given the rounding to a half hour, it does not matter.

Klaupeter Bungert has made a rectification to 18.58 UT, or 19.48 LMT, using Alexander Marr's technique. Heute um diese Stunde warst Du, mein geliebter Sohn! vor 25 Jahren geboren.’“ (English: From the director of the Robert Schumann hous, Zwickau, to me: 'I am astonished that you doubt the baptism registry time of 'half ten in the evening (see copy attached). Even when this is only an approximate time, it can hardly be assumed that the birth happened at a totally different time of day. I have now found another document, which confirms roughly your assumption. In a letter of Schumann's mother to Robert of 8 June 1835, which we only have in copy, she says: Evening half eight (= 7:30 pm). Today around this hour, my dear son, you were born 25 years ago.)

This time given by the mother, 19:30 LMT, is quite close to Bungert's rectification of 19:48 LMT.
