Charles "Sparky" Schulz

American cartoonist, the creator of "Peanuts" comic strip, which made its debut on 2 October 1950. He was named Cartoonist of the Year in 1958 and gained a Hollywood Walk of Fame sidewalk star in 1996. He won Emmys, Tony's and Peabody awards. Schulz says that his famed character, Charlie Brown, is his alter ego and Snoopy is modeled after the most intelligent and unruly dog he ever had.

The Santa Rosa City Council approved the zoning in October of 1999 for a 17,000 sq. ft.. museum to be built by Schulz to commemorate his works. The museum will feature galleries for his characters, a research center and a 99-seat theater.

On 16 November 1999, Schulz underwent emergency surgery for a blocked abdominal aorta and later announced that the doctors had found colon cancer. He was released from the hospital on 30 November 1999 and returned to his home in Santa Rosa, CA, where he has drawn his cartoons for the past 50 years. He announced on 14 December 1999 that he was going to retire to spend his days with his family, and the daily release on 3 January 2000 would be his last Peanuts.

Schulz served in WW II in the army and sold cartoons to the Saturday Evening Post, did lettering for a church comic book and taught art. He died peacefully on 12 February 2000, c. 9:45 PM PST, Santa Rosa, CA.
