Dutch religious leader and scholar, known for expanding the notion of classical history from Greek and ancient Roman history to include Persian, Babylonian, Jewish and ancient Egyptian history. He died, January 21, 1609, in Leiden.
Sy Scholfield quotes "Autobiography of Joseph Scaliger" (1927), p. 29: "I was born at Agen, in Guienne, in the year 1540, on the fourth of August, fourteen hours after noon: so that my birthday is reckoned the fifth of August."
