Biography
British author of a romanticized autobiography "Hadrian the Seventh." The book was released in 1904; in 1967 a play was based on the fantasy. A Roman Catholic convert who self-imposed martyrdom on himself, he was also a homosexual, failing repeatedly to enter the priesthood. Writing under the pseudonym, Baron Corvo, he spent ten years wandering Europe; painting, tutoring and photography before doing any serious writing. His most important works, a historical account of the Borgias and a series of biographies of the lives of saints, was surpassed by his fictional autobiography as a Pope.
Rolfe died 10/26/1913, Venice, Italy.
