Biography

American fine artist and Art Director-Designer of ad agencies from age 20 with product work, logos, commercials, movie posters, book and record covers; designer of the Los Angeles Workbook for seven years. Cartoonist of a humor book "No Good Dogs," 1982. Betsy has a great serenity and dignity, is extremely soft spoken and gentle in manner, poised, stable and sensible. She is close to her family, the third daughter born in 2 1/2 years. Being non-demanding and pleasant in disposition, she was often disregarded in the needs of others. Her dad moved out in August 1966 and she was raised by a single mother along with her four siblings. It made little difference as her traveling father had given her scant attention during his weekends home.

With a third-class malocclusion (under bite), she wore braces 1969-72 and felt outclassed by her two older, beautiful sisters. Betsy had her first romance in 1968 with a classmate.

In May 1969, she won a summer art scholarship to Odis Institute. Her art teacher at school recognized her raw talent and gave her private lessons, gratis, from September 1969 for a year. In 1970, she won another brief scholarship to Los Angeles Art Center. After working for a year, she put herself into Chenard Art School September 1971 for a year of concentrated study, the last year that Chenard was open.

In September 1970, she met Jim and they were a steady couple for the following six years, moving into an apartment together on 5/13/1972. On 2/17/1972, Betts began work in the ad department of Workshop West Ad Agency, where she soon graduated from design of cake boxes and Cool-Whip containers to became head of the art department for five years. The company sent her on several national trips to sit in on commodity meetings, appreciating not only her keen eye for design, but her cool poise. She also directed commercial films and her ads appeared in national magazines and movie posters. Vacations also meant trips; several cruises and Hawaii. She lived modestly, dressed conservatively for the '60s, and steadily put money aside in savings. After she and Jim had an amiable separation in early 1977, she took her own apartment. She bought her first (secondhand) car in February 1973 and a Honda Civic in April 1975.

Betts was the quiet one, so it was surprising when she, of all her family, was adventurous enough to quit her job and take off to Europe with a backpack on 5/03/1978. She toured, stayed in youth hostels and met other young people, junketing through England, France and Spain. She returned home on 9/28/78 and took an apartment to share with her brother Dana, a huge loft.

On 4/13/1981 she leased a duplex on Bronson. (When she moved out, her sister Lynn took the apartment and is still there in 2001, at the same rent.) Betts had a date with Dusty Lee, a fellow commercial artist, on 7/04/1981. In spite of strife over his drug use, breaking up and making up, they married on 5/15/1984. Their son Trevor was born on 7/02/1984 and they were in their own home that Betts's savings had bought.

Betsy's career was going well, and she adored her son, but the marriage went from bad to worse, with Dusty getting gradually back into drugs. She told no one in her family that he was becoming physically abusive and stayed the course until 1986, when they divorced.

In December 1990, Betts met Martyn Sells, a sophisticated Brit who was in America for several years on business. They fell deeply in love, and married on 7/09/1992. Martyn returned to England where he bought a $700,000 pub in Upper Keyes, the Salsbury plains area, where Betts joined him on 10/26/1992. The next two years were ferociously hard work, renovating and running the pub (bar and restaurant) but Betts fell in love with the English countryside and people along with her handsome husband.

On 10/04/1994, her world exploded when she found out that Martyn had been dallying with several of the waitresses at the pub, including one who was age 16. She struggled to make sense of her life and salvage her marriage, until 2/16/1995, when she left England and Martyn. She spent five aimless months in Los Angeles, then took her son and moved to Aspen, Colorado where her sister Amy lived. She did odd art jobs in Aspen through 1996, trying to heal but immersed in escape. It was not until she moved back to Los Angeles in February 1997, taking her house back from renters who had trashed it and getting a new job in an Ad agency, that she began the next phase of her life. She dates the birthday of her new life as 2/10/1997.
