Biography
French director, the controversial filmmaker of French new wave whose few, unorthodox films have baffled or bored some critics and fascinated others. He is a former staff critic and a cameraman on short documentaries, he directed several shorts before his first feature, "Paris Belongs to Us," 1960. His films usually shun the traditions of cinema and may go for four hours, mixing 35 and 16 mm footage.
