Biography
American film director, noted for "The Couch Trip," 1989, "The Golden Child," 1988, "The Candidate," 1972, and "Downhill Racer," 1969.
Born in Wisconsin, Ritchie grew up in Berkeley, California. He studied at Harvard and graduated with degrees in history and literature. His first professional production was Arthur Kopit’s "Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feelin’ So Sad." He went on to work as an assistant producer and director for television shows like "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." and "Dr. Kildare." His goal was to make films that people enjoyed, and although he worked steadily through the 1980s and 1990s, his greatest creative success was during the 1970s.
He married twice and had five children. Ritchie died from complications of prostate cancer on 4/16/2001, New York City, NY.
