Biography

American ecclesiastic, Roman Catholic cardinal ordained a priest 4/25/1961, Los Angeles, CA. The youngest of seven kids, he began graduate studies in Canon Law in Rome in October 1961, and earned his doctorate in Canon Law in June 1964. From 1964-66 he was an associate pastor and in 1964 entered the English language department of the Secretariat of State. He served in various posts that included Iran, Pakistan, Samoa, Australia, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka. From 1979-1987, Rigali accompanied Pope John Paul II on international trips. Among his many honors and titles, he was appointed the 8th bishop of St. Louis 1/25/1994. On July 15, 2003, he ws named by Pope John Paul II as the new Archbishop of Philadelphia, replacing Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua with an installation date in this new assignment of October 7, 2003. On September 28, 2003, Pope John Paul II announced that Archbishop Rigali would be made Cardinal in a ceremony on October 21, 2003.
