Polish brilliant operatic tenor, after an initial debut in 1874 as a baritone. His brother Edouard was also a famous singer.
De Reszke died at his villa in Nice at 3:45pm on 3 April 1925, having contracted influenza. He was aged 75.
Sy Scholfield cites "An Act of Christening of the Parish of St. John of Warsaw for the year 1850, No. 155" quoted in Jean de Reszke and the great days of opera by Clara Leiser (Minton, Balch, 1934), p. 15: "On March 17 1850 'at half past four in the afternoon, arrived [at the Registry Office] Jan Reszke, 32 years old, re siding in Warsaw at the Kozia No. 62, in the presence of Wladyslaw Ufniarski, Lieutenant of Artillery of the Troops of the Tsar of Russia, and another witness, and he presented a child of masculine sex, born in Warsaw in his residence on the day of January 14 of the current year at the hour of twelve and a half after midnight, of his wife Emilja, nee Ufniarska, 23 years old. At the holy christening which took place this day, this child was given names Jan Mieczyslaw and his god-parents were Jan Wtadyslaw Kurc and Laura Trzcinska. The above act, after having been read aloud, was signed by us, together with the father and witnesses. Father Jan Bogdan, Head of the Parish / Jan Reszke, Father / Wladystaw Ufniarski, Godfather / Jan Szepan Kulescha, witness.'"
Death data from same book, p. 321: "On Good Friday afternoon, April 3 1925, he died, at a quarter to four. The young men students stood watch until he was taken to the Catholic Church in Nice on Monday..."
