American homicide, the result of an encounter between two gangs of young men at Howard Beach, Queen, NY, 12/20/1986. That night, three black men left their broken-down car and hiked across Queens looking for a subway. They were seen by four white teen-agers who picked up a dozen buddies and began chasing them. One of the men escaped, one ran across the parkway trying to escape when he was struck and killed by traffic and the third was caught and beaten by the racist gang of thugs. A resident called 911 for emergency police help, fixing the time of the attack as 00:37 AM EST.
Howard Beach is primarily a white, middle-class suburb of Queens and the gang of boys came from a birthday party where the underage kids were drinking. Eddie had always been known as a good kid with no prior troubles with the law but he was a follower. He and several other boys were convicted of manslaughter.
Eddie's family believed in his innocence and had a private investigator on the case for more than five years, trying to determine exactly which of the boys were guilty.
