Biography
American octuplets, six boys and two girls, delivered by Caesarian section and weighing between 1 pound, 8 ounces, and 3 pounds, 4 ounces. Doctors were expecting seven babies and were surprised to find the eighth. The babies were born within five minutes, with the last one born at 10:48 AM. They are only the second set of octuplets born alive in the US.
The parents' identity was not initially released nor was it known whether fertility drugs were used. More details became known subsequently: the babies' mother was Nadya Suleman. She had undergone in vitro fertilization and implantation; she had had six children previously, three of whom are disabled, she lives with her retired mother and uses food stamps and other government programs to support herself and her children. Her mother expressed dismay initially at her daughter's decision to have more babies but Nadya said that as an only child herself, she wanted a large family and intends to go back to school, get a teaching degree and support her large brood. She then established a website asking for donations.
The children's names were given on one website as: Noah, Hiya, Jonah, Isaiah, Nariah, Jeremiah, McCai and Josiah
