Biography

French politician, a deputy from Brasses-Alpes, 1919, Minister of Finance from 1930 and advocate of the military innovations proposed by De Gaulle. In 1938 Reynaud was Minister of Finance in the cabinet of Edouard Daladier, refusing any compromise with the Nazis.

On 3/21/1940, he was made President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Within three months, due to political stress, Reynaud resigned on 6/16/1940. He was arrested in September by Petain's government and sentenced to life in prison in October 1941. With the Allies' victory, he was released in 1945 and became one of the main witnesses against Petain at the Marshal's trial.
