Biography
Italian Vatican II which may be considered the chart for the modern Catholic Church, the Catholic convocation that brought sweeping changes to the Roman Catholic religion including the saying of Mass in the vernacular, having priests face the congregants, increased authority for non-priests, and a general modernization of the practice of Catholicism. "The sessions didn't start until 10/13/1962 and the sessions went between 9am and noon. But the first day was the opening ceremony of only the mass and all the attendants- some 3500 people."
In the 40 years since the Council, R.C. theologians have fiercely debated how the church should be run. The council encouraged a sweeping series of reforms aimed at democratizing the church, but those who supported its conclusions have often felt themselves at odds with subsequent popes more committed to centralized power, most notably John Paul II.
Since the current scandal over sexual abuse, begun in January 2002 with the case of defrocked priest John Geoghan, reformers have gained strength for changes on a variety of fronts – from giving the laity more power to re-examine longstanding policies on celibacy and female priests.
